چکیده

The anisotropy splitting in the ground state of the single-molecule magnet Mn4O3BrsOAcd3sdbmd3 is studied by inelastic neutron scattering as a function of hydrostatic pressure. This allows a tuning of the anisotropy and thus the energy barrier for slow magnetization relaxation at low temperatures. The value of the negative axial anisotropy parameter Dcluster changes from −0.0627s1d meV at ambient to −0.0603s3d meV at 12 kbar pressure, and in the same pressure range the height of the energy barrier between up and down spins is reduced from 1.260s5d meV to 1.213s9d meV. Since the MnuBr bond is significantly softer and thus more compressible than the MnuO bonds, pressure induces a tilt of the single ion Mn3+ anisotropy axes, resulting in the net reduction of the axial cluster anisotropy.

Single-molecule magnets: preparation and properties of low symmetry [Mn4O3(O2CPh-R)4(dbm)3] complexes with S = 9/2.

The preparation and properties of [Mn(4)O(3)(O(2)CPh-R)(4)(dbm)(3)] (R = H, p-Me, p-OMe, and o-Cl; dbm(-) is the anion of dibenzoylmethane) single-molecule magnets (SMMs) with virtual C(S) symmetry are reported. They were prepared by controlled potential electrolysis in 26-80% yields. The structures comprise a distorted-cubane core of virtual C(S) symmetry, in contrast to the other, more common...

Direct observation of magnetic anisotropy in an individual Fe4 single-molecule magnet.

We study three-terminal charge transport through individual Fe4 single-molecule magnets. Magnetic anisotropy of the single molecule is directly observed by introducing a spectroscopic technique based on measuring the position of the degeneracy point as a function of gate voltage and applied magnetic field. A nonlinear field-dependence is observed which changes by rotating the sample and is, thu...

Interaction of spin and vibrations in transport through single-molecule magnets

We study electron transport through a single-molecule magnet (SMM) and the interplay of its anisotropic spin with quantized vibrational distortions of the molecule. Based on numerical renormalization group calculations we show that, despite the longitudinal anisotropy barrier and small transverse anisotropy, vibrational fluctuations can induce quantum spin-tunneling (QST) and a QST-Kondo effect...

Slow magnetic relaxation in homoleptic trispyrazolylborate complexes of neodymium(III) and uranium(III).

Lanthanide- and actinide-based single-molecule magnets are rapidly gaining prominence due to the unique properties of f-orbitals, yet no direct comparison of slow magnetic relaxation of an isostructural and valence isoelectronic lanthanide and actinide complex exists. We present the dynamic magnetic properties of two f-element single-molecule magnets, NdTp(3) and UTp(3) (Tp(-) = trispyrazolylbo...
